What one automatically thinks when they see a movie titled “THE HIVE” is that it’s a film about killer bee’s, however this movie is about killer ants. This movie actually takes it’s premise on the fact that there are certain species of ants that will attack and kill anything that’s in their path. It’s a known fact that in Africa the Mofu people of Cameroon rely on army ants to protect their village and crops from invaders, but these villagers also know not to get in the path of the ants either. There are actual reports of army ants making a path right though the huts of African village’s and attacking humans and even eating babies. Such as the first scene in this film. But this films does not take place in Africa, it takes place in Brazil, which does have a killer ant of it’s own known as the bullet ant, which has a pretty nasty sting, but is not known to kill people.
Pretty much, THE HIVE is a rip off of a MACGYVER episode I remember watching when I was a kid. Well kind of; it is more or a sci-fi take with ants. in a nut shell the movie is about a group of exterminators that are hired to wipe out the ants as they make their way across the jungle destroying everything in their path. However these are not the type of ants you just spray some pyrethrin on and call it a day. No! These ants are intelligent and have the power to plan out their own attacks to catch their food and humans just so happen to be on the menu.
So we all know by now that THE HIVE is part of the man-eater series that premiered on the Sci-fi channel and were produced by RHI Entertainment and released by Genius Products. we know that they pump these films out like hotcakes in a diner. Most of them are bad, really bad. However I found THE HIVE to actually be one of the better films they have produced. The script is actually not half bad, the acting is decent and the overall production value is not half bad. Sure the effects don’t look all that great, but the killer ants in INDIANA JONES AND THE CRYSTAL SKULL didn’t look so great either. The movie is shot and edited very well and the overall quality of picture, minus the effects looks very good.
Overall, THE HIVE is a decent little killer insect film, that has a pretty god story that moves along real well. Out of all the Man-eater series films I’ve seen so far this one has to rank as one of the best ones. It’s a unique story that’s not something original as we’ve seen plenty of killer ant movies before, but it does stand on it’s own and present the audience with a decent story. It’s a fun little film, that well worth the watch if your into killer insect films or happen to like sci-fi channel original movies. I honestly have to say this is one of the better one’s I’ve seen in a while.
