Now here’s a disc that when it arrived on my door step that I knew was going to be one of those documentaries that I was going to have to sit down and really take in the whole thing. So for the past week I’ve been sitting down in the afternoon after I feed my daughter her afternoon bottle, and watch an episode or two in this collection.
The thing with The Fearmakers Collection is that, the film is more like and educational video of some of the most famous faces in the horror business. These people include, Jack Arnold, Tod Browning, William Castle, Roger Corman, Terence Fisher, Tobe Hooper, Roman Polanski, Jacques Tourneur, Roland West and Robert Wise. Each episode is about that particular filmmakers and their contributions to the genre. There are also plenty of interviews with some horror greats such as Dario Argento, John Carpenter, Joe Dante Stuart Gordon, Kim Henkel, Gunnar Hansen, Richard Matheson and more. The discs include some footage from some of the film produced and directed by some of these filmmakers as well as some biographical information about the person.
Some of my favorite episodes on the disc include Jack Arnold’s and Tobe Hoopers. I learned a lot about Jack Arnold that I didn’t know about him outside the Creature from the Black Lagoon films. And the Tobe Hooper Episode went over a lot about his dealings with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and his other films.
There is really not much to say about the over all collection except that every true horror fan or so called true horror fans should pick this one up. The thing is that as horror fans we think we know it all when it comes to the genre. But most fans don’t know much before the 1980’s. I for one have read many books on the likes of the silent horror films and the early talkies of the 1930’s and 40’s. And while I can’t remember everything about these films and the people who helped make them possible; it’s good to have a DVD collection such as this one to help give me a better education about the genre and to also keep as a reference piece.
Overall, As a horror fan and someone who loves the genre, I have no choice but to highly recommend The Fearmakers Collection. Besides Christopher Garetano’s Horror Business which is a documentary that shows the hardships of making independent horror films, Fearmakers is one that educates about the history of the genre and the men and women that helped make horror what it is today. True horror fans and filmmakers alike should go out and get a copy of these discs. They are a very inspiring look into the lives and careers of some of the best faces of horror.
