I have never really been a fan of spoofball horror comedies. Sure I liked films such as Shawn of the Dead and Fido which are in fact considered horror comedies. But this film, Killer Pad just didn’t have anything close to what those films had to offer. Sure the movie was directed by Freddy Kruger himself Robert Englund but that does not mean it’s a great movie.

Killer pad is about a group of friends who move out to California and find a home in the Hollywood Hills. When they first get there they are told the place they originally where suppose to live in is no longer available, but that a much bigger and better place was. The boys fall in love with the spacious place and for the price they agree to move in. It’s the perfect party house. Soon all the neighbors who just happen to be hot looking girls start showing up, telling the boys they have the perfect place to throw parties in. The boys apply for a party permit and thanks to the the powers that be get it. However those power that be, are living in a gateway to hell under the house, and once the un-susceptive partiers arrive, the demons will make themselves known and pull some unruly pranks on them and the boys.

I for one was not a big fan of the script, the film is supposed to be a spoof/goofball horror comedy and don’t get me wrong it’s just that, but in my opinion I didn’t find any of what the script had to offer to be funny in anyway. The characters were cardboard cutouts of themselves and offered no real emotion attachment in which the audience can relate too. Sure some of the dialogue and in scene innuendos where funny, but that’s about it.

The acting in the film is alright. The three leads in the film try their hardest to act to the best of their ability, but the characters that were written for them didn’t allow them to really give a great comedic performance. The film has a lot of cameo appearances by genre and non-genre stars alike such as Héctor Jiménez, Andy Milonakis, Lin Shaye, Jennifer Lyons, Corri English, Sam McMurray, and Joseph Lawrence in the most memorable role as himself. Other than that there is really not much going on in terms of great acting.

The production value is very similar to the likes of some horror films like Night of the Demons, and Highway to Hell, especially in the make-up and visual effects areas. As far as set design goes there is nothing great, but it fits the mood and comedic atmosphere that the movie is trying to throw off. The demon make-up effects look somewhat decent, but the rest of the effects look somewhat alright while other look pretty bad.

Overall, Killer Pad is not really my kind of film. While it had some decent and funny moments I really just couldn’t get myself into this film. it’s one of those horror comedies that to either need to be in the mood to watch or have the personality to really get into and understand this kind of film. I know there will be plenty of people who will either love or hate this film. I for one did not, but that’s not to say that you won’t depending on your sense of humor.
