It’s very hard to pull off a good sci-fi film with a minimal budget. Science Fiction is a genre that usually does best when the visual effects look stunning and the story is out of this world. The same goes with a horror-sci-fi film. You need something that looks and feels real, but in the case where the two genres’ are evenly split with a story, you can get away with using a singular location to tell the the story in. Such is the case with films like Alien, Event Horizon and with this film Eden Log.

I could not find any information on what the Budget to EDEN LOG was, but I’m sure compared to the majority of science fiction based horror films it could not have been that much. The film has this noir feel to it, much like films like DARK CITY and BLADE RUNNER, but the story seems very familiar to likes of such horror films as THE DECENT and RESIDENT EVIL. TWELVE MONKEYS is another film that also comes to mind when it comes to the look and feel, but not the story.

EDEN LOG has a very complex story and takes it’s audience on a ride along with it’s lead character Tolbiac (Clovis Cornillac). it starts out with Tolbiac passed out, naked in a cave where he has lost his memory and seems to be suffering from amnesia. As he makes his way out of the cave he finds himself in a series of rooms where computers and televisions tell him where he is. He slowly collects information based on what he’s seeing, but soon learns that he is not alone in this underground development. With him are mutant like monster who will attack without warning as well as a military unit that seems to be there to wipe out any so called survivors. As he avoids both, he slowly learns that the development is linked underneath a large tree and he follow the plants roots upward and finds himself on different levels. As he works his way up and out of EDEN LOG, he’s learns the truth about not only himself, but the place known as EDEN LOG. Where not everything is as it seems.

The script for EDEN LOG is a good one. Its story driven, but yet it’s also character driven as we learn more about our lead as the film moves along. At first glace you can see that the film has a lot of similarity story and look wise to others films, some of which I listed above. Yet it stands on it’s own as the film develops into it’s own.

I can’t really say much about the acting other than it’s pretty good. There is not much of a cast in this film besides our lead character Tolbiac, a female counterpart though a bit of the film and a few solders, mutants and lab techs who are part of recordings. Some of the characters don’t even have names in the film. So pretty much all I can really say is that the acting was acceptable and compelling. The film did have good directing and production value as well. Great visual effects and some pretty impressive photography.

The EDEN LOG DVD has no special features other than that there is a French Language version of the film with English subtitles.

Overall, EDEN LOG has a neat sci-fi story that will keep the viewer guessing to the very end. It’s a film where you the audience are part of the film a long with its lead character in trying to solve the mystery that is EDEN LOG, and you’ll be shocked at what you find at the end. EDEN LOG is a film I recommend to fans who loved films like BLADE RUNNER, DARK CITY, TWELVE MONKEYS and THE DECENT.
