Dark Realms Magazine continues to be one of the slickest and best looking magazines covering the horror scene with an eclectic array of reviews, articles, and short fiction. With a heavy, cardstock cover and glossy pages, you know a lot of pride goes into each issue. Issue # 20 features a vast number of film, book, video game and music reviews. The music reviews are especially outstanding as they cover everything from metal, goth, and punk, to industrial and instrumental. Truly something for every taste! The articles in Dark Realms are fairly short but interesting and our geared towards a broad cross-section of readers.
Joseph Iorillo pens “A History of Halloween” exploring the traditions of horror fan’s favorite holiday including its origins in Celtic, Roman, and Greek customs and celebrations. “Highgate Cemetery” by Alissa Hall is a wonderful article about the history of one of London’s most infamous cemeteries, and one of its most architecturally stunning. 13 photographs are including and show the many Roman and Egyptian influences in the various tombs and grave stones. Highgate was the location for Hammer Films “Taste the Blood of Dracula” and I’m sure many of you are now saying, “ohhh….that place!” But the most terrifying aspect of the locale is the legend of the Highgate Vampire, a sinister figure in black who has been seen numerous times throughout the years.
Russell Williams contributes, “The Legend of Lizzie Borden”. The article includes the know facts about the murder of Borden’s father and stepmother and while the well-known children’s rhyme may be off about the number of whacks they received with the hand axe, it was more than enough to do the job. Borden, of course, was found not guilty although much like O.J. Simpson, popular opinion was widely against her and she was ostracized by the community and forced to move. Today, her former home in Fall River, MA is a popular bed & breakfast destination for tourists who can stay in Lizzie’s old room and perhaps catch a glimpse of one of several spirits said to reside there.
From Dark Realms’ Monster Files comes a feature on the Jersey Devil which has been spotted in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey for over 200 years. A description of the beast is provided along with its possible origins. Even today people still report seeing the bat-winged creature.
The lone fiction piece “Black Heart” by Edgar Mason finds a monster hunter and writer named Morgan, lured out to the backwoods by a mysterious woman with a tale of witchcraft and zombies. A quick, entertaining read. Other features include Madame Endora’s Secrets of Mystic symbols, and spotlights on artists Joseph Vargo and Kristoffer Frisk.
Dark Realms Magazine is a fantastic magazine; extremely well-produced and designed with entertaining articles and informative reviews. While I would love to see a little more fiction within its pages, this is one that I will always look forward to checking out.
