To Sequel or Not To Sequel

K. Trap Jones

The End… I can’t say I have ever written those words. Maybe it’s pointless or maybe I just don’t like saying goodbye to certain characters. All I know is that I have never and will never add those words to the back of any book. I think what happens in my writing process is that as I am writing the last chapter; I start to daydream about where the main character could go next. It happens all the time and kind of blocks me from typing the famous words The End. It drove me crazy one time as if the character exited the fictional story and was pleading with me to continue. Hopefully, I’m not the only one this happens to; otherwise I may just be slowly going insane. It’s the old saying “I write because my characters won’t leave me alone.”

I’ve done sequels and believe me, they are tough to do. Trying to keep the consistent flow and tone can be troubling. Then, of course, the sequel has to improve upon the original. It’s a lot to round up and I think it’s easier to just write The End and be done with it, but for me… I like the potential challenge of revisiting a story down the road.

With One Bad Fur Day, I started out in the insane mode because I originally wanted to do two books. In OBFD the story is told through the eyes of Sid the Sheriff as he searches for his missing wife, Sally. The story takes us through the many areas of the Louisiana bayous during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Everything is completely turned upside down within the animal population and Sid has to travel across the chaos is search of clues. Well, as I was writing OBFD, I realized we are only getting Sid’s side of the story. I had the crazy and extremely difficult idea to write a second book through the eyes of Sally. I mean, she must’ve had quite the story as well, but because of the story is written as narrative horror, the reader only follows Sid.

With the potential side of the Sally’s story and the twist at that the ending of OBFD, I would love to revisit the bayous of Louisiana and continue with Another Bad Fur Day.

KTrapJones_OneBadFurDay_FrontCoverCall it odd, call it off-beat, call it fantasy; but don’t think for a moment that One Bad Fur Day is anything other than a suspense driven horror ride that blurs the lines between harsh reality and brutal imagery…

As Hurricane Katrina barrels through the Louisiana bayous, the animal population is forced to deal with the tumultuous upheaval of their world. Sheriff Sid and his wife are caught completely off-guard by the natural disaster unfolding around them as they battle not only the turbulent winds and flooding waters, but heinous acts committed by other creatures inhabiting the backwaters. Following a brutal assault on his wife, Sid is forced to fight off voodoo-priestess snakes, a junkyard raccoon, deceitful badgers, and a band of roving power-hungry alligators. While clinging to his tenuous hold as sheriff, Sid must find a way to recapture what is rightfully his and exact his revenge.

  1. Trap Jones does a fantastic job of pairing the genuine horror of a natural disaster with a story of deceit, betrayal and vengeance that pulls you in and forces the reader to identify with Sid as he journeys through the darkest reaches of the bayous, facing deadly encounters, on One Bad Fur Day!
