What do you get when you cross “Poltergeist” with “Darkness Falls”, You get this film. A lot better than “Darkness Falls” but no where near as good as “Poltergeist”. For a horror film rated PG-13, Fear of the Dark uses the less is more effect depending more on the thrill of surprise than blood and gore.

The film takes place in one night with two brothers trapped in their house, The younger brother has a really big fear of the dark to the point were he is actually seeking professional help for it, and his parents have all kind of things rigged in the house so that light will pretty much always be on wherever their son goes. The older son thinks he’s full of crap until he himself becomes victim to the stranger from the dark that plague his brother night to night. Together the brother team up to fight the evil from the dark.

The Production value is alright, however the art direction is not the best and the film lacks some greatness that is needed for the film to have that scary feel to it. The acting is alright but could be better, and the story and script are alright. What really make this film neat is the special make-up effects. The ghosts from the dark look great, and it’s good to see that a decision was made to use some extra money from the budget to make the monsters look good.

Overall it’s a great film for teenage kids to watch, it’s got that cool horror scare that they might enjoy, for the hardcore horror fans it’s just another alright straight to video horror films with less gore and more scares.
