Zack Snider’s 300 is a film that paved the way for more myth based film about the young days of human history. A time where gods like Zeus, Apollo and Poseidon were worshipped. Films such as 300 and Clash of the Titans did well in the box office and both received decent reviews. Immortals is another tale that takes place during the time of early human history and is a story about how the gods put their faith in a human peasant to lead them against a power hungry king bent on destroying the names of the gods along the Greek country side.
Immortals follows the tale of a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) that, unknown to even himself is being trained by the god Zeus as a warrior. When his village is slaughtered and his mother is killed by the power hungry King Hyperion (Micky Rourke); Theseus is sent to the salt minds as a slave as punishment for killing many of King Hyperion men. Hyperion agenda is to wipe out all beliefs in the gods as he searches for the oracle, a young women with direct connections to the gods and the future. She also knows where the powerful Epirus Bow is hidden, a weapon that give the holder the power to unleash war in both Heaven and Earth. Theseus and the Oracle meet at the salt mines and escape with a group of other slaves together they follow the prophecies of the Oracle, find the Epirus Bow and try to bring an end to the war that King Hyperion has unleashed upon Grease.
Immortals has that same look and feel that 300 did, but its not as polished and over animated like 300 was. The film does use a lot of visual effects, but has a more realistic look. Personally, I think it is an overall better film than 300, with a great storyline that borders a war story with fantasy elements without being to over the top. There is the perfect mix of man and gods in this film without odd monsters and crazy beasts popping every mountain side. It is a classic mythological war story without being over bearing. There are some great action scenes that involve al the horrible details and events that come with war. Gore hounds will be delighted. This film has plenty of blood and guts to satisfy their cravings. The films’ acting is also decent and the storyline is the main attraction that keeps the viewer wanting more.
The Blu-ray disc has many features which include the film in High Definition, Two featurettes It’s No Myth and Caravaggio Meets Fight Clue: Tarsem’s Vision. There is also an alternate opening and two alternate endings, deleted scenes and the Immortals: Gods & Heroes Graphic Novel. The Blu-ray Disc also comes with a digital copy of the film as well.
I love films that take place during the times of ancient civilizations. I especially like ones that include mythology and the Greek and Roman Gods. Immortals is one of these film that just hits the mark. It is fun; action packed and has enough blood, fighting and gore to keep any horror fan happy. It also has a great plot as well. I highly recommend this film and adding this Blu-ray to your collection.
