I knew right from the beginning that “Last Exit” was in fact “not my kind of film”. In fact the poor use of shots and shaky cam look got on my nerves from the get go. Maybe it’s just me, but some of these indie films from overseas are really slow. I mean this felt like I was watching somebody’s collection of home videos.
So what exactly is this film about, well I fell asleep about halfway though the film, just to wake up an hour later, skip back a few scenes and began to watch this film again. What I figured out is this film all leads up to this crazy ending. It’s about this guy Nigel who’s pretty much, more or less a loser. He owes people money and is pretty much trying to get out of this jam he’s in. He lives with his wife Maria in an apartment in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their relationship needless to say is a bit rocky. In order to pay off his loan he takes a job working for a guy only known as “The President”. All he has to do is have a packages delivered to his apartment, no questions asked. He is teamed up with a girl named Tanya, who pretty much just wants to screw him because she’s getting paid too.. Nigel really wants nothing to do with her at first, but then begins to fall for her. As things begin to heat up and pressures mounts from everyone involved, he begins to become a bit of a crazy person, and take these issues into his own hands.
Now I can’t say that my attention was fully on this film at all times, but I caught all the key elements that made me able enough to know what this film was about. It’s not really a horror film, but it has many crazy key elements that include some blood, and some crazy people. However “Last Exit” can be considered more of an Exploitation film, there is a lot of sex involved in the film, mainly between Nigel and Tanya. Now don’t expect to much T & A from this film however as the sex scenes are done more in good taste rather than looking more like a bad soft-core porno. The filmmaker had a good sense of taste and this film was purely shot for the art of storytelling rather than letting the film all hang loose and letting half nude women make their film. “Last Exit” is a film that was written in good taste sought to say, and I have to respect the film makers for that. I will also go on record as saying that the script is pretty good, as well as the dialogue. It may sound weird being that I did not care much for the story, but I need to give credit where credit is due, and the script to “Last Exit” is very well written.
The acting is alright, nothing special, I mean yes it’s a indie film, but the acting is not something that stands out and hits you. I mean the performances are decent, but they are not something that help the film stand out as much. I mean it’s basic acting, nothing more, nothing less.
There are not that many special effects or make-up effects at all in this film. Yes there is some blood, but nothing we haven’t seen before. So with effects at such a minimal in this film, they don’t make or break the film in anyway.
Overall, I thought the film had a good script and an alright story. But the indie look and the dark overall feel of the film, combined with the shaky shots and everything drove me nuts. “Last Exit” was not a film that could hold my attention for very long, and while I feel that some people might hail it as a great film, I for one had trouble getting though it.
