I have to admit, when I first got a request from the filmmakers to review this film, I just shook my head and said to myself, “You got to be fucking kidding me”. However I saw that it was a short film, so I figured why the hell not. Well As most of you know I’m not really into corny troma like films. However, this film was so stupid, it was good. I mean I really laughed my ass off.
The film is about a serial killer baker. Whom at the beginning is killed by a police officer in his kitchen. I won’t give away how he get’s killed. anyway he comes back to life as a guy with a giant muffin for head, and years later he still out there killing. His former bakery has now been turned into a donut shop, where a bunch of lazy kids work with. The film becomes a comedy similar to Clerks with a troma like horror twist. Well the muffin man heads back to his former shop to reek havoc on the place.
I have to say as far as the script goes, it was pretty dam good. I mean for a small no budget indie film, the script was not half bad. It was goofy as anything, but it worked. It’s a simple story with a very easy plot to follow. The acting was decent for a b-movie, I mean it was pretty much a bunch of amateur actors in the film, but they did very well. The directing is pretty decent, I can’t say that the film was edited good, but it was decent as well. It could of been tighter. Production Value was not half bad either, Pretty much the donut shop seemed like a shop staged in someone’s home, but they pulled it off really well. The special effects are not half bad, the Muffin head looks very fake, but the other effects are not half bad.
Overall, The Muffin Man is one messed up flick that works. I think the only problem that this film might have making it into mass markets is that it’s not a feature. It runs about forty minutes long, which in today’s market is a tough buy. So probably the only place you’ll be able to see this film will be at conventions, film festivals and maybe though the website. For fans of cheesy horror films like Jack Frost and Uncle Sam, or fans of Troma films. This one is right up your alley.
