I Know What UFO Did Last Summer

This book is a hilarious elementary sci-fi elementary tale also entertaining for adults. Garone’s humor shines on the page and his characters are snarky, witty, brave and funny. Golden Leader, Baller One, and Space Cadet spend the summer looking for UFOs. Golden Leader takes his mission seriously, while Baller One tags alone because it’s his best friend. And the new girl just wants to have some people to talk to, though she’s skeptical about whether her neighbors are nutty or smart.

They don’t discover any UFOS, but they do discover Space Cadet’s dad, an engineer, has gotten himself caught up in a  bad situation after working in Delaware and has brought the creatures the Sleechers with him, which are attached to the unit. It’s up to the three kids to save their town from the Sleechers and Space Cadet’s dad’s secret engineering project he stole from his last job before trouble strikes.

I would have read this book in elementary school and eagerly awaited the next one, hoping it was a series. I would have hidden in the hallway with a flashlight past my bedtime, which I often did, unless I got caught by my mom, and then she took my book away and made me go to bed. This book is worth hiding after your bedtime with a flashlight to read. Trust me. The characters jump off the page with their attitude and sass. I would have idolized them at that age and thought it was so cool. I’d want to make my own UFO watch group. Heck, I still think high towers and telescopes are fun. Who am I kidding? I’m just a big kid at heart.
